In a coastal town near Barcelona, you’ll find the house of someone we deeply admire, as he keeps the work of José Antonio Coderch and Manuel Valls in impeccable condition. He tells us that he travelled to Valencia just to find the original piece when he had to repair the drainage gutters on the roof of the house. From Casa Ugalde, built in 1951.
“There is a magnificent view from one side of the entire coast leading up to Barcelona, the sea to the south, and on the other side there is a view over the town of Villa de Arenys and its small fishing port. (…) It is a house that they have allowed me to project freely, but based exactly on the instructions of the owners. These are the conditions that characterise the plans.” – J.A. Coderch.
In this lighting project with Santa & Cole products, we intuitively sensed the uses of the different spaces of the house and reinterpreted them accompanied by the objects and furniture of the owners. We found a warm light between whitewashed walls, stone walls, covered with tiled vaults or the terracotta pavements of the architecture itself, combined with the pine trees and exterior retaining walls. A home in which light filters through the windows of the rooms, always with the best orientation and views of the sea.
A great work by the modernist architect, it’s been inhabited by those who have best known how to experience it and maintain it as the architect intended.
